Santa Clara County Voter's Guide On Children's Issues

Alum Rock Union School District

Corina Herrera-Loera

My mission is to ensure every child and family in our community has access to the support and resources they need to thrive early in their development. I am committed to transparency, equitable resource allocation, and fostering educational excellence, ensuring our schools are safe, welcoming, inclusive, and culturally responsive places for all.

  1. Over 80% of voters polled say they want elected officials to prioritize children and families. What are the top three issues affecting our children and families and how will you make our region a place where all families can thrive?

The top three issues affecting children and families are equitable access to quality education, mental health support, and affordable housing. I will prioritize resource allocation to ensure every child has access to a safe, inclusive learning environment with mental health programs. In addition I will continue to advocate for affordable housing for all. By securing funding for affordable housing for teachers and families, we can build a more stable and supportive community where all families can thrive.

  2. High quality childcare improves school readiness and parents' workforce participation. What will you do to improve access to high quality childcare and preschool programs in our diverse communities?

I will continue to advocate for expanding access to affordable, high-quality childcare and preschool programs. I led efforts to open our Early Learning Center which has now been serving our Mayfair community in the East Side of San Jose, providing access to quality childcare and education for our children ages 0-5. By securing additional funding and partnering with local organizations, we can continue to increase the availability of resources that support school readiness as well as the health and well-being of our students. I will also continue to work to ensure these programs are inclusive, accessible, and empowering families to thrive.

  3. Much of the student achievement gap has been linked to the opportunity gap that children in low-income families and children of color confront (e.g., lack of access to healthy food, preschool, tutors, and enrichment activities). If elected, what will you do to increase equity of opportunity?

If re-elected, I will continue to prioritize equity by advocating for programs that address the root causes of the opportunity gap. I will work to expand access to affordable preschool, free tutoring, and enrichment programs for low-income families and children of color. Additionally, I will continue to champion partnerships to allocate resources that support whole-child development, ensuring all students have the tools they need to succeed. By allocating resources equitably and tailoring support to diverse community needs, we can help close the achievement gap and provide every child with a fair chance to thrive.

  4. What steps will you take to improve inclusion and outcomes for children with disabilities and their families in our community?

I will continue to prioritize inclusion and equitable outcomes for children with disabilities by advocating for increased resources, specialized staff, and individualized support plans. I've worked to ensure all students have access to the tools and accommodations they need to thrive. Expanding professional development for educators on inclusive practices and disability awareness will be a key focus, alongside fostering partnerships with families to create tailored learning environments. I’m committed to continue creating safe, supportive, and accessible schools where children with disabilities and their families are actively engaged and supported in achieving their full potential.

  5. If elected, how will you use the resources of your new role to improve children's well-being and access to mental and behavioral health services?

I've been dedicated to expanding mental and behavioral health services, including supporting restorative practices that foster healing and growth for students. If re-elected, I will continue advocating for mental health resources, ensuring that our schools are equipped with counselors and programs that address the emotional and social well-being of students. My focus remains on promoting restorative practices and creating a safe, supportive learning environment that prioritizes students' mental health.
