I am a firm believer that demographics should not determine destiny. The situation a child is born into should never seal their fate. No matter their background, every student should be given every chance to succeed and teachers should get all the resources they need to make that happen.

  1. Over 80% of voters polled say they want elected officials to prioritize children and families. What are the top three issues affecting our children and families and how will you make our region a place where all families can thrive?

The top three issues affecting children and families are educational equity, mental health, and climate change. Not all students have access to high-quality, inclusive education. As stated above, I am a firm believer that demographics should not determine destiny. As such, I will work to ensure there are equitable resources and culturally responsive curricula. Furthermore, rising stress and mental health challenges that started before COVID need immediate attention. I will promote the expansion of comprehensive, school-based mental health services and advocate for resources to that end. Lastly, I will support, promote, and expand the already in place county wide climate action effort.

  2. High quality childcare improves school readiness and parents' workforce participation. What will you do to improve access to high quality childcare and preschool programs in our diverse communities?

My efforts will include advocacy at all levels and collaboration with outside providers. I will advocate with county, state and federal legislators for increased funding to expand affordable, high-quality childcare programs, always prioritizing underserved communities. I will make sure the SCCOE collaborates with childcare providers and community organizations to enhance program quality through training, resources, and culturally responsive practices. Lastly, I will work toward universal preschool access, reducing barriers for families by streamlining enrollment processes and increasing awareness of available programs across the county.

  3. Much of the student achievement gap has been linked to the opportunity gap that children in low-income families and children of color confront (e.g., lack of access to healthy food, preschool, tutors, and enrichment activities). If elected, what will you do to increase equity of opportunity?

To increase equity of opportunity in Santa Clara County, we will need to advocate for equitable funding allocated based on student needs, ensuring low-income area schools have access to quality education, support services, and enrichment programs. As discussed above, we will also need to expand access to early learning by supporting and advocating for the expansion of affordable, high-quality preschool and childcare programs, providing a strong foundation for all children. Lastly, we will need to collaborate with community organizations to offer wraparound services, such as healthy meals, tutoring, mental health support, and after-school activities.

  4. What steps will you take to improve inclusion and outcomes for children with disabilities and their families in our community?

I will advocate for inclusive education and enhanced support services, and bolster community collaboration. Since its inception, the IDEA has been underfunded. There must be a continued (and everlasting) push for equitable funding and support to ensure all schools are equipped with trained staff, accessible facilities, and inclusive curricula that meet diverse learning needs. Then, the county should be able to expand access to early intervention, therapy, and mental health services, ensuring students and their families receive comprehensive support. We should also partner with local organizations to create awareness, provide resources, and develop inclusive extracurricular activities.

  5. If elected, how will you use the resources of your new role to improve children's well-being and access to mental and behavioral health services?

As a Santa Clara County Board of Education Trustee I will advocate for the integration of mental health professionals in every county school (and the funding required for the same), providing on-site counseling, workshops, and crisis intervention. I will also make sure the SCCOE collaborates with local health agencies and nonprofits to create accessible, culturally sensitive mental health programs tailored to students' diverse needs. Lastly, I will use my platform to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma, and connect families with available resources.
