Santa Clara County Voter's Guide On Children's Issues

City of Cupertino

Kitty Moore

My philosophy is to empower children and families by providing inclusive, evidence-based support that fosters resilience, promotes well-being, and strengthens communities. We need to create safe environments where every child can thrive, and every family can access the resources they need to nurture growth, learning, and lifelong success!

  1. Over 80% of voters polled say they want elected officials to prioritize children and families. What are the top three issues affecting our children and families and how will you make our region a place where all families can thrive?

In our region, three pressing issues significantly impact children and families: economic instability, access to quality education, and mental health challenges. Many families face financial hardships, which can lead to stress and hinder a child’s development. To address this, we can advocate for stronger job training programs and support local businesses, ensuring families have stable incomes.

Access to quality education is crucial for a child’s future. We need to invest in early childhood education and provide resources to underfunded schools. By fostering partnerships between schools and community organizations, we can create a supportive learning environment for all children.

  2. High quality childcare improves school readiness and parents' workforce participation. What will you do to improve access to high quality childcare and preschool programs in our diverse communities?

To improve access to high-quality childcare and preschool programs in our diverse communities, we can implement several cost-effective strategies. Establishing partnerships with local businesses to offer childcare subsidies can alleviate financial burdens for families. Additionally, creating a network of community co-op childcare centers allows parents to share resources and reduce costs while fostering community ties.

Expanding outreach efforts to inform families about available programs and eligibility for financial assistance is crucial. Lastly, training local educators in culturally responsive practices will ensure that all children feel included and engaged.

  3. Much of the student achievement gap has been linked to the opportunity gap that children in low-income families and children of color confront (e.g., lack of access to healthy food, preschool, tutors, and enrichment activities). If elected, what will you do to increase equity of opportunity?

To increase equity of opportunity for children from low-income families and communities of color, we can implement several cost-effective strategies. First, community gardens and partnerships with local farms can provide access to healthy food, improving nutrition and focus. Expanding low-cost preschool programs is essential, ensuring all children have a strong educational foundation.

Additionally, creating tutoring programs using volunteers from local high schools or colleges can provide personalized academic support. Offering free or low-cost enrichment activities, such as arts and sports, can engage children and broaden their experiences.

  4. What steps will you take to improve inclusion and outcomes for children with disabilities and their families in our community?

To improve inclusion and outcomes for children with disabilities and their families, we can take several effective steps. Expanding all-inclusive playgrounds is vital, providing accessible spaces where all children can play and interact. Additionally, we can implement training programs for educators and childcare providers to enhance their ability to support diverse needs.

Creating peer support networks for families will also foster community connections. Hosting workshops focused on disability awareness can promote understanding and inclusivity among community members. Together, these initiatives can create a supportive environment where children with disabilities thrive and feel valued.

  5. If elected, how will you use the resources of your new role to improve children's well-being and access to mental and behavioral health services?

If re-elected, I will prioritize improving children's well-being and access to mental and behavioral health services county-wide. I will advocate for enhanced partnerships with local mental health organizations to offer workshops and resources for families.

Additionally, I aim to expand community programs that provide safe spaces for children to engage in wellness activities and peer support. By promoting mental health awareness during city events, we can reach more families and foster open conversations. I will work to secure funding for initiatives that directly address these needs, ensuring that every child in our region has access and support for their well-being.
